From the gorgeous opening cutscene that sets the story and mood for what’s to follow, Kingdom Hearts’ transition to PS3 is seamless. Kingdom Hearts proper, on the other hand, has never looked or played better than it does in HD 1.5 Remix.

But given that 358/2 Days is the weakest of the three games, not to mention the one with the least amount of Disney goodness, and I’m not too bummed out that it’s not included. Anyone who purchases this compilation expecting to get a HD remake of the DS experience for PS3 will be greeted with nearly three hours of angsty cutscenes about eating ice cream on rooftops (among other story beats) and text wrap-ups of each mission. If there are Xbox One players who are even thinking about picking up Kingdom Hearts 3, having their own versions of the HD 1.5 and 2.5 Remix would certainly better prepare them to jump into the latest chapter of the game’s story. Here’s what the 1.5 pack entails: a remastered version of the excellent Kingdom Hearts Final Mix, (an edition previously released in Japan with additional cutscenes and content) an HD remake of its direct sequel, Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories and the nonplayable cutscenes and story text from the Nintendo DS’s Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days.My quibble on the last one is that it’s not exactly clear from the box text that 358/2 Days isn’t a playable game. Having a current-gen version of the recently released remixed games would benefit Xbox owners the most considering only PS3 owners have been able to catch up with the Kingdom Hearts story. I’m not making any announcements though, we can’t make any announcements yet!”

We understand what our players want, so we will explore the possibility. When asked about current-gen versions of the game ever seeing the light of day, he responded by saying, “I think is something we’ll explore. Tai Yasue-san spoke with IGN about the development process of Kingdom Hearts 3, which Square Enix had always planned to release HD 1.5 and 2.5 Remix as a way to prepare latecomers to the franchise to better prepare themselves for the upcoming sequel. PS4 owners shouldn’t give up on the Kingdom Hearts dream as the co-director of 2.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts 3 says Square Enix hasn’t completely ruled out the series being made available on current-gen consoles. Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix was released on the PlayStation 3 this week, but those who would prefer to enjoy the Kingdom Hearts series on their PlayStation 4 are out of luck for the time being, considering the console isn’t backwards compatible.
